Alex Bonilla Presentation 2 Essay #2
Group 2
What I like about this group is how close to home their introduction hits. Mental health is a very important topic that I’ve had to deal with throughout the years. Group 2 breaks down mental health into two easy to digest categories. What’s improved and what’s gotten worse. It is good that they mention mental support groups in South Florida. They also provide resources for those struggling with mental health. I feel like I am being helped directly. There is a clear understanding of how even though we’re more connected than ever mental health across the globe has gradually declined. I am grateful for them making me aware of the subsidized mental health services. Personally, I’ve struggled with mental health and have been in a psychiatric ward several times and this group has made me feel that mental health services really are there to help. Jazlyn makes a distinction between which institutions help with mental health at a state level and at a county level. This is important because not every person can seek the same assistance regarding mental health at the same level.
Jhulianna brings up the problems regarding mental health across different government levels. For example, there is a stigma regarding mental health at a local level. It is great how Jhulianna suggests some solutions to the problems our governments are dealing with. One Solution was to include mental health classes in schools Curriculum. Another solution I agree with is using social media to normalize seeking therapy. We as the viewer are showed the United States versus the world. I believe in the United States we don’t do enough to help those struggling with mental health. I find it amazing how Gabriela mentions what MDC should begin to do regarding mental health. Group 2 teaches me the history of MDC’s mental health support pre and post covid which I did not know. Jhulianna’s poll on how teens view mental health brought new perspectives to my attention. When I first started dealing with mental health problems, I did not speak to anyone about it.
Group 3
Group three starts off their presentation with an important question which I very much enjoyed. Aitana mentions various what ifs that many people think about. I like how she mentions a person named Emmett and their situation. We all want to leave a legacy behind that our children will admire and inspire many to come. I am made to think about the kind of ancestor that I want to be and how I will be remembered. It is good in how a distinction is made between inherited dreams and authentic Aspirations for example an inherited dream is passed down through family expectations meanwhile authentic aspirations stem from personal values and interests. One dream I inherited from my family as well as my cousins did is that we will graduate university and become great professionals. Group three shares an important takeaway message that enriches us the viewers. Whether we choose a path like our families or not choosing to walk a path that aligns with us will leave us with lasting success and fulfillment.
I completely agree when Sofia says that choosing between financial security and personal passion creates tension. For example, when I started college in 2019, I decided to take criminal justice to become a detective and since it was an easier path than engineering. Despite this I was not really interested in criminal justice, I just thought I was. Fast forward to 2022 and I chose computer engineering since it’s what really interests me and will also provide a more secure future financially than becoming a detective would. It couldn’t be truer when Roseli states that people and families typically choose careers for themselves based on gender roles. Simple things like the presentation having the same background showed the team mentality of this group. I noticed that compared to our group where we choose different backgrounds, and we really didn’t communicate to each other our thoughts about our presentation.
Group 1
While I feel like my groups could have been better, I feel that the topic sort of flowed in a way. Right off the bat there is a clear connection made between education and the economy. I am glad my teammate educated me on economic terms. Due to my teammates input I better understand why a quality education is so important. Spending on college and university is more of an investment than an expense. Charles is correct in my eyes when he says that education should be made available for everyone. I liked how our groups added layers upon layers about the subject.
Alicia pointed out an interesting fact I did not know previously that fifteen percent of all households with children in the country lack internet access. It is interesting learning about food stamps and the different programs available to low-income households. This year is my second year receiving a Pell grant and it has helped greatly. Our presentation has taught me everything from financial aid to the different acts that are in place to help those that are disabled. When I began studying at Miami Dade college, I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship. The scholarship allowed me to take several courses I otherwise would have not been able to. It is interesting to learn that other countries teach their citizens how to be prepared for the future financially. Personally, I was fortunate enough to take an economics class in high school but just like Megan stated some classes don’t teach us how to pay our taxes or how to use a credit card wisely.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I learned very much and am better prepared for my future than I was before I got to witness the three presentations. Each slide was jam packed with information that can be useful when applied. I am grateful to each and every person that contributed to their presentation, it has enriched me in more ways than one.
Yea!! This was a wonderful reflection on the 3 presentations.
